5 Black Owned Brands To Shop This Season
I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for new brands to support and incorporate into my wardrobe as it grows. Whether it be adding more color, prints, or textures, it’s important to be intentional about what you’re adding and removing from your wardrobe, so that it doesn’t become too overwhelming.
Over the past decade, so many new and unique black-owned designers have been pushed to the forefront of fashion and seen on the likes of many celebrities, influencers, and now everyday people. So, I’ve curated a selection of 5 of my favorite black-owned designers that will have everything your wardrobe needs this spring/summer season.
This fun and colorful brand is full of bold prints, textures, and unique silhouettes that I haven’t seen anywhere else before. I gravitated towards this brand because the pieces are very versatile and practical. You can honestly dress either of these items up or down and still feel just as stylish. I would describe this designers style aesthetic as romantic, edgy, and minimal Christopher John Rogers is based out of NYC. This brand exists to create emotional & sensitive clothing with a focus on effortful dressing directed toward an individual with a strong sense of self.
2. Fe Noel
This brand makes me feel peaceful and relaxed. This women-owned brand is influenced by the Founder's Grenadian heritage, love for travel, vibrant colors, and bold prints. I gravitated towards this brand because of how easygoing the pieces are. Each piece can be styled individually and still make such a statement. The color palettes are very soft and neutral but still manage to grab your attention. I would describe this designer's style aesthetic as boho, classic and minimal.
Felish “Fe” Noel is a Brooklyn-based designer who entered the industry at the age of 19 when she opened a brick-and-mortar boutique for vintage lovers and trendsetters. That boutique served as a catalyst for today’s namesake clothing and lifestyle womenswear brand ‘Fe Noel’ and further stimulated her desire to help women embrace their femininity.
This brand married comfort and style with its signature knitwear in 2006. I’m all about comfort so when I came across this brand, I instantly fell in love. Knitwear is perfect for transitioning into the spring and summer months. This brand features pieces that are designed for all people, genders, races, sizes, and personalities. I would describe this designer's style aesthetic as minimal, classic, and edgy.
Victor Glemaud is a Haitian-American designer based out of Queens, New York who was a finalist in the 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and was honored for his achievements by the Ambassador of Haiti to the United States. He began his design career as a design assistant to Patrick Robinson while studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
4. Stella Jean
This season is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. And that’s exactly what you’ll be doing when wearing Stella Jean. This brand effortlessly mixes bold prints and colors that tell a story. I would describe this designer's style aesthetic as edgy, boho, and preppy.
Stella Novarino, known professionally as Stella Jean, is an Italian fashion designer of partial Haitian origin. Her designs reflect her Creole heritage, and she often works with Haitian and African artisans, incorporating their work into her fashions. Through her use of native craftspeople, she seeks to support struggling countries and communities and preserve their ancestral arts and traditions.
This luxury South African brand is definitely in competition on its own. Its unique details and fun patterns really make each piece a conversation starter. One of his collections was inspired by old family photos that he then created each of these pieces. I would describe this designer's style aesthetic as classic, romantic, and edgy. Thebe was born in Kimberley and based in Johannesburg. He soon rose to prominence as the winner of the 2019 LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize, and a finalist in the 2021 International Woolmark Prize.
