5 Throwback Trends That Are Making A Comeback

Everyone knows that fashion is cyclical, but from the new era Dad Look to a magical take on grunge, sometimes it's the ones you least expect that trend the hardest. Also in the mix are easier-to-achieve 70s denim, next-level miniskirts, and the long-awaited return of the Marc Jacobs Stam bag. Discover all the comebacks in our latest edit.

The Dad Look

Take your cues from ‘Internet Dad’ Pedro Pascal. The actor’s penchant for fatherhood roles—most recently as Joel in HBO’s drama, The Last of Us—has seen him don a host of fatherly looks on talk show appearances and SNL. No longer just for middle-aged dads, the look is easily achieved with a tucked-in polo shirt, khaki pants or cargo shorts, white sneakers or loafers, and the pièce de résistance: a belt. Extra details such as a baseball cap, pre-tech-era watch, and sunglasses, will really complete the look. Often associated with laid-back, casual dressing, this style is proving popular for its comfort, practicality, and lack of pretension.

Flared Jeans

Back in the 70s, flared jeans reigned supreme. Men and women paired their swinging hems with platform shoes or boots for a leg-lengthening effect. But this time around, flares are making a comeback in a subtler, chicer way. Forget exaggerated bell bottoms, today’s iterations are sleek, tailored, and available in a host of washes and styles. But whichever way you wear them, the iconic staple will always be imbued with a free-spirited rebelliousness.

Miniskirts

The look made popular by 60s-era Twiggy and Mary Quant is back with a vengeance. Today, the mini skirt's comeback is led by Miu Miu whose pleated iteration solidified the Y2K trend when it went viral last year. A coterie of celebrities and influencers are now making the mini their own, such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and the queen of the mini, Paris Hilton.

Fairy-Goth Makeup

After the 90s grunge came fairy goth makeup. This unique look combines elements of the new romantic goth look with the magical and whimsical world of fairies. Featured on the runway at Louis Vuitton and Versace, where models sported exaggerated winged eyeliner, smudged dark eye-shadow, and a heavy dusting of glitter, think of fairy-goth as grunge 2.0.

The Marc Jacobs Stam Bag

A decade after it was first introduced, the Marc Jacobs Stam bag is back. The structured top handle with a detachable crossbody strap and kiss-lock closure was named after model-of-the-moment Jessica Stam and inspired by a quilted vintage handbag. Now all things Y2K are making a comeback, this design—once the height of ‘It bag’ chic—is set to have another moment. Marc Jacobs has re-released it with a host of early aughts faces—Paris Hilton, Ashanti, Selma Blair, and Jessica Stam herself—featuring in the campaign.
