Designer Spotlight: Tom Ford
Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and filmmaker who is renowned for his eponymous luxury fashion brand. Born in Austin, Texas in 1961, Ford began his fashion career in the late 1980s, working for Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis. He then joined Gucci in 1990 as the brand's womenswear designer, and in 1994, he was promoted to creative director of the entire brand.
During his tenure at Gucci, Tom Ford revitalized the brand, bringing a sense of glamour and sensuality to its collections. He is credited with turning Gucci into a billion-dollar brand and making it one of the most desirable luxury labels in the world. In addition to his work at Gucci, Ford also launched his own eponymous label in 2006, which quickly became known for its sleek, sexy designs.
Up until he announced he was leaving fashion in early 2023, Tom Ford was thought of as one of the most influential designers in the fashion industry. His name was synonymous with a sophisticated, elegant aesthetic and luxurious materials such as cashmere, silk, and leather. In addition to his fashion work, Ford also directed several acclaimed films, including "A Single Man" and "Nocturnal Animals."
Throughout his career, Tom Ford received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to fashion and film, including the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award in 2008 and the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2011. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented and innovative designers of his generation. In April 2023 it was announced that Ford’s long-time associate Peter Hawkings would take over as creative director, while Guillaume Jesel would take the helm as chief executive and president.
