GET LIPPY

This month, we’re collaborating with The Eve Appeal to raise awareness of the five gynae cancers, and encourage everyone to Get Lippy and Loud by opening life-saving conversations.

Each year, more than 22,050 women and people with gynae organs in the UK are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer, which equates to around 60 diagnoses each day. However, research by The Eve Appeal shows that only 5% of people have a good understanding of gynae cancers, and only 15% of cervical screening.

Early diagnosis makes all the difference to the outcome people face when it comes to cancer. By spreading the word about the symptoms of gynae cancers and encouraging people to feel comfortable speaking to a doctor, The Get Lippy campaign aims to break down the veil of shame and save lives.

From doctors to influencers and makeup artists, read on to discover why the Get Lippy ambassadors are proud to be part of the campaign, and how you can get involved.

“We need to be able to talk about gynae health as comfortably and confidently as we do our boobs. With many of the gynaecological cancer symptoms being easy to miss, the Get Lippy campaign hopes to raise awareness of what you should be looking for and, ultimately, get more people diagnosed earlier.”

“I am really proud to be a part of The Eve Appeal’s Get Lippy campaign and shout about all things gynae health. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer during lockdown, and had I not talked openly about what I was experiencing with my family and the GP, I would not have got an early diagnosis and subsequent all clear.

Women have been conditioned and sometimes shamed into keeping quiet about their gynae health. But without open discussions, we will never eliminate the unnecessary taboos around the subject. Other cancers don’t have these barriers – we need to be loud and proud and lean on each other for support.”

“The taboo, shame and embarrassment associated with just speaking up about gynae health is part of the reason so many people suffer in silence; generally don't attend their appointments; and are diagnosed with cancer and worse prognoses.

"Too many lives are being lost because of this – it's about time we change the narrative. The more we Get Lippy and use these seen to be ‘forbidden’ words, the more they are normalised, which should have always been the case. This way, everyone can comfortably seek help and support sooner."

Dr Aziza Sesay, NHS GP

“I’m passionate about gynae health because I think there’s been so much shame and embarrassment associated with talking about it. It’s perceived as crude almost, and this has led to cancers going undetected and untreated, resulting in needless loss of life. Understanding our gynae health, knowing our anatomy properly and breaking the taboo will save lives.”
