ModeSens Influencer of the Week: Alanna Fairey
A free spirit who believes in making her own style rules, Alanna Fairey—Fashion Content Editor for the Commonwealth Fashion Council and a freelance PR maven—lives by the motto, "If you like it, wear it!" and is our featured ModeSens Influencer of the Week.
How did you get into fashion?
AV: I've loved fashion since I was young. It's a big part of how I express myself. During my final year of undergrad, I realized that I could turn this passion into a career in journalism. After getting my undergraduate degree, I pursued a postgraduate degree in journalism, which eventually led to an internship at The Kit, a fashion magazine in Toronto. While interning, I also started freelancing as a stylist and social media coordinator. My freelancing journey led to an incredible experience: having tea with Meghan Markle at her Toronto home while she starred in Suits. However, my focus soon shifted from journalism to fashion PR and corporate communications, which led to a master's degree in fashion communication in England, where I currently live.
Describe your style in three words.
AF: Classic, feminine and romantic.
Who would you consider your favorite designers?
AV: I'm a fan of Alexander McQueen's timeless and attention-grabbing designs. I also admire Stella McCartney for her ethical and sustainable practices. I plan on naming my first daughter after her. Fashion should align with our values and make a positive impact, and these designers do just that.
Do you have a favorite aspect of working in fashion?
AF: Fashion is a means of self-expression that can reveal so much about a person. The most thrilling part of being in the industry is observing innovations and trends. From discovering emerging designers to exploring the latest trends there is always something new to discover.
How would you describe your daily look?
AV: Comfort is key. I typically go for a casual look by pairing a simple t-shirt with my favorite Levi's or Calvin Klein jeans and a pair of Keds. To add style, I accessorize with statement rings. When I have on-site meetings, camera appearances, or events to attend, I like to emulate Blake Lively's powerful and sophisticated look in the movie A Simple Favor. I will wear a tailored power suit that makes a statement, or a streamlined dress. I always avoid loud patterns (though I have a soft spot for gingham and polka dots!) and put more effort into my makeup to achieve a polished and glamorous look, especially if I'm on camera.
How would you describe your best fashion memory?
AV: Within a week of moving to England, I had the opportunity to attend my first London fashion week. I wore a vintage Oscar de la Renta blazer as a mini dress with black bike shorts, a Gucci belt, vintage worker cap with Fila sneakers. To pull the look together, I added a Christian Dior red lip. This outfit and experience represent the beginning of a new chapter in my life. As I moved to a new country, pursued my career, and developed an interest in fashion, I was open to experiences that have helped shape me. Who I am now is reflected in this outfit.

Plus, it offers curated fashion collections and inspirational trend reports that guide my fashion choices. I appreciate how it caters to my ever-changing style and helps me capture the look I'm going for on any particular day.
