Q&A Alexander Cavaluzzo

How did you get into fashion? 

AC: When I was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology studying art history, my passion for fashion design grew immensely. All of my New York City fantasies came to life right before my eyes. For instance, I was completely captivated by the bloated concoction of duchesse satin and taffeta that Sarah Jessica Parker was wearing once the day I saw her in person. Her dress was exquisite, and seeing one of my favorite characters in real life was an unforgettable experience as if the city itself had come alive, and I fell in love with fashion even more.

Describe your style in three words.

AC: Outré, significant, confrontational,

Who are your favorite designers?

AC: The late Vivienne Westwood is an idol of mine. I love how she was able to merge artistic expression, historical dress, and activism seamlessly in her designs. Her impact on fashion is immeasurable, and it was inspiring to see a woman rise to the top of a predominantly male industry. My personal style also incorporates pieces from Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, and Commes des Garcons, and as someone who values fiscal responsibility, I appreciate being able to find designer pieces on modesens without breaking the bank.

What is your favorite thing about working in fashion? 

AC: I am convinced that fashion has the potential to foster connections and enliven spirits–I find delight in researching and exploring it. It is heartening to witness people expressing their true selves through their outfits. Even though it is not always acknowledged, the process of getting dressed can be a profoundly political activity that encompasses labor rights, gender identity, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, wisdom, environmentalism, and much more. It is astounding to consider that something as pedestrian as a t-shirt can encapsulate so many components of the modern world. Your wardrobe is a manifestation of your environment, and there is limitless potential for transformation through the decisions we make daily.

What do you love about ModeSens?
