Q&A with Nadia Michel

How did you get into fashion?

NM: It kind of happened organically: I was a magazine editor when a photographer-friend asked me to help style her clients, and it grew from there.

What's your earliest fashion memory?

NM: Growing up, we didn't have much money, so I’d hunt down pieces wherever I could. When I was 11, I found a vintage Lacoste shirt in a thrift shop and a polka dot bubble skirt in a bin at a street festival—I’d pair that with a vintage cropped blazer from my mom's closet and top it off with a fedora. That kind of mix-and-match outfit really cemented my relationship with fashion.

How would you describe your style in three words?

NM: Boho meets gangster!

Who are your favorite designers?

NM: I love Rick Owens and Alexander Wang for how they’ve impacted streetwear. And Dubai-based Mrs. Keepa who constantly comes up with fresh, feminine looks. My go-to luxury label is Saint Laurent. But I'm also a fan of Dion Lee, who makes really edgy pieces.

What looks are you best known for?

NM: Bold yet timeless get-ups that span minimal and maximalism.

What’s your #OOTD right now?

NM: I usually wear loose-fitting jeans and a bodysuit with a blazer or jacket. In the summer, I’ll swap out the pants for leather shorts or a miniskirt and use oversized shirts as layering pieces. For evening, minidresses almost always feel right and are so easy to move in. I'm really into sparkles and metallics with lace-up heels or mules. You can see more on her social media here.

What’s your most effective influencer hack?

NM: Using the List feature on ModeSens! I love that it helps me share recommended lists for my clients and followers, so they can easily see what I’d pick out for them while also allowing them to compare prices across retailers. The Virtual Closet is good, too; it helps keep track of my favorite items in an easy, organized way. I’ve recently started writing blogs on the platform, and that’s a great place to go into more depth on the reasons behind my fashion choices.

What's your standout fashion memory?

NM: When I was Managing Editor at a magazine in the Middle East, I was invited to attend the Fashion Trust Arabia event in Qatar, and Lebanese couture designer Zuhair Murad lent me the most beautiful black gown, which I wore with a gold cabochon necklace from Nawbar jewelers. I got my makeup done next to Nicky Hilton in one of the hotel suites. That whole day was pretty memorable!

What’s your ultimate piece of fashion advice?

NM: Style is like a language. I explain this in a book I wrote called ‘40 Lessons. Make sure you’re saying exactly what you want to say.
