After graduating from Bunka Fashion College and cutting his teeth as a patternmaker for Junya Watanabe, Japanese designer Fumito Ganryu launched his eponymous label under the Comme des Garçons umbrella in 2008. With the aim of creating “universal items,” Ganryu’s streetwear-inspired designs explore the synthesis of contrasting elements. Easy silhouettes including selvedge denim jeans, poplin shirts, sarouel-style chinos, and patchworked pullovers are cut in unconventional textiles and punctuated with avant-garde accents. The result is what the designer calls “forward-thinking casualwear,” a highly wearable yet uniquely progressive take on wardrobe staples.
