It is named after the house E 1027, Maison en bord de mer, which Eileen Gray built for herself and her partner, Jean Badovici. The code-name is derived as follows: E for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet), 2 for Badovici, and 7 for Gray. In the 1920s, Eileen Gray experimented with various versions of the Adjustable Table E1027. She created a version with a black metal top as an alternative to the crystal glass top, and selected black for the frame. The matte black coating elegantly emphasizes the table's lines and form-a version she considered particularly refined. Together with Zeev Aram, Eileen Gray developed the Adjustable Table E1027 for production in the 1970s. The chrome-plated version was produced first, with the black frame version introduced later. The 1926 original in black even adorned the cover of the exhibition catalogue for the major Eileen Gray retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Side table.
