First pitched by Stan Lee back in 1962, Spider-Man broke the comics mould and the hero has achieved legends status in the decades that have passed since. Initially rejected for the fact that the character was at odds with the glamorous and successful archetype, Spider-Man finally got its debut on the cover of Amazing Fantasy, which by that point was already due to be cancelled. Despite the original misgivings, the issue became Marvel's 15th best-selling in that year and the ensuing artworks created as Spider-man shot to fame are now captured in Taschen's 'The Marvel Comics Library, Spider-Man, Vol.1, 1962–1964', a 698 page XXL volume that brings together the first 21 Spider-Man stories from 1962 to 1964. The artwork of co-creator and artist Steve Ditko is presented without recolouring by Taschen in order to represent the imagery as it would have appeared when originally published in the early sixties and the book — produced in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company — features three different paper stocks created exclusively for this edition. Including an introduction by collector David Mandel as well as rare photographs and original art, this special volume is the ultimate celebration of the teen super hero.
